With a population of over 9.5 million in the metropolitan area, Chicago is the largest city in Illinois and the third largest city in the United States.
The center of the city, the Loop, is the hub of business, culture and arts, and shopping in Chicago. The Chicago Loop is home to many beautiful high rise offices, residences, and many historic buildings, such as the Board of Trade Building, the Harold Washington Library, the Chicago Cultural Center, and the original Water Tower building. The Chicago Loop is also home to three of the city’s tallest buildings: the JohnHancockCenter, the Aon Center, and the Sears Tower, which is also the tallest building in the country.
The widely varied real estate market in Chicago includes charming historic districts as well as modern and sleek urban neighborhoods.
Chicago is divided into quadrants: the South Side, North Side, Southwest Side, and West Side and bordered to the east by Lake Michigan.
There are many neighborhoods to consider when purchasing real estate in Chicago, Illinois. The North Side generally consists of the area north of the Loop, along the lake up to Evanston, which is the first suburb just north of Chicago and everything east of I90/94, also known as the Kennedy and Edens expressways. A wide variety of Chicago properties are available on the North Side, from single family homes, to high rise living, and commercial space opportunities. Many of the northern Chicago suburbs are considered part of the North Side.
The South Side/Southwest Side comprises about sixty percent of Chicago land. Dominated by single-family detached homes in Chicago and a few larger industrial zones, the population of the South Side is less than one might expect. The South Side of Chicago generally consists of everything south of the Loop along the lake and immediately surrounding I90/94 (also known as the Dan Ryan Expressway). Many of the southern and southwestern Chicago suburbs are considered part of the South Side.
The West Side, previously known for declining neighborhoods and infrastructure, has recently made great strides in urban renewal projects. Many Chicago Housing Authority public housing projects have grown into gentrified Chicago neighborhoods attracting more middle and upper class families. As a result, construction projects and general public interest is being generated into the beautified neighborhoods of the West Side.
