Rogers Park Real Estate

Rogers Park is the farthest north neighborhood in the 77 Chicago recognized communities. The featured landmarks include Lake Michigan, Loyola University Chicago, the Granada Theatre, the Jesuit Order, and the Madonna Della Strada.

With a population around 63,000, Rogers Park is one of the city’s most diverse neighborhoods both culturally and economically. A broad ethnic mix is represented by over eighty different languages spoken by Rogers Park residents.

Like many Chicago communities, Rogers Park has undergone recent gentrification efforts, which has resulted in many of the apartment buildings being converted to condominiums and high rises. With constant new construction and development, vintage buildings continue to act as a trademark of this Chicago neighborhood.

The Rogers Park Community

Hemmed in by the City of Evanston, Lake Michigan, Devon Avenue, and Ridge Boulevard, Rogers Park is home to a large artist community that has joined forces with local businesses to help promote the work of local artists. The Rogers Park Business and Artists Networking Group, formed in 2001, is a group designed to bring Rogers Park artists and business people together for breakfast meetings and networking sessions.

A testament to the close-knit relationship within the community, Rogers Park includes several civic and social community groups:  The Rogers Park Builder’s Group, which focuses on responsible development and use of property in the neighborhood, The Rogers Park Community Council, dedicated to improving quality of life in Rogers Park, Forum 49, a communication forum committed to holding official government accountable and empowering citizens of Rogers Park through education and encouraging voter registration.

Rogers Park is named after one of the original settlers of the area, Phillip Rogers.  He developed the land and traded produce and supplies with local Native Americans, from whom he later purchased the land that we now call, Rogers Park. The community was formed between two of the trails the tribes used, now called Ridge Boulevard and Rogers Avenue. In the mid 1800s, farmers from Germany and Luxembourg grew crops and a few decades later, the area was incorporated.

Rogers Park is divided into three smaller neighborhoods: Loyola, West Rogers Park, and East Rogers Park.

Loyola

Situated around Loyola University, one of the nation’s top universities, this is the neighborhood of choice among Loyola students. Loyola is situated right next to the shores of Lake Michigan, with its beautiful beaches and abundance of water sports. Also the home to several popular local establishments, such as Café Enui, Moreseland, Heartland Café, and many more, Loyola offers a multitude of dining and nightlife possibilities.

West Rogers Park (otherwise known as West Ridge)

Often a matter of contention whether this area is part of Rogers Park or not, West Rogers Park separated from the rest of the town officially in the 1890s as result of the Cabbage War.  The Cabbage War was a conflict over park districts and boundaries. Now West Rogers is of the more affluent communities in north Chicago and has a largely diverse population similar to all of Rogers Park.

 East Rogers Park

One of the other names for Rogers Park in general, East Rogers Park is often used in place of the currently accepted Rogers Park name. In general, you could think of it as describing the areas off of the Loyola campus that are not part of the West Ridge (or West Rogers Park) neighborhood.

Rogers Park Real Estate

The broad range of property available in Rogers Park represents the economically diverse population of the neighborhood.   Homes for sale range from the $100,000s to almost $4 million. Styles range from historic and Victorian era buildings to mid-20th century frame houses and newer condo offerings. Even within the single family home choices, you will see large homes, bungalows, and everything in between.

The recent gentrification of Rogers Park has resulted in a large increase in the popularity of the neighborhood.  For that reason, there has also been an increase in the development of the Rogers Park real estate market, with many upscale condos and high rises replacing some of the older rental units.

One of the best aspects of owning Rogers Park real estate is the proximity to the culture and employment opportunities that Chicago has to offer.  With live entertainment, sporting events, performing and visual arts just minutes from Rogers Park neighborhoods, residents of Rogers Park have all of the advantages of living downtown while enjoying the close-knit community that this neighborhood offers.  Adding to the sense of community, the presence of Loyola University brings a college town feel to parts of Rogers Park that one doesn’t find in other Chicago neighborhoods.

With a large arts community, a resident of Rogers Park only has to check the newspaper or internet for a cultural activity within the neighborhood. Local art activities include events like the Musicians of St. Jerome in Concert, New Moon Drumming rituals, Artist of the Wall Festival, various arts and crafts festivals, film documentaries, outdoor movie nights, and much more.
